Watch some high-speed footage of a GMA weld pool solidifying and cooling, captured with the MeltView® UD25 camera at 700 frames per second. It's a great reminder of how much happens in those final moments, both above and below the solidification temperature.
You can see the puddle oscillating, surface convective currents with different micro-constituents, solidification from the edge to the center, and the formation of a mushy zone as heat is conducted into the base material. Due to the pulsed lasers, the image remains clear, allowing observation of shrinkage in this region as the puddle cools below the melting point. Other solidification-stage and post-solidification phenomena will become obvious if the material or process changes when viewed with this camera.
