Captured in this video is an experienced welder's second attempt with the torch-mounted APEX2 camera. See the illustrations on the Welding Education and Training blog post for examples of how the torch-mounted camera may be employed.
The welder, an instructor who teaches in Lansing, Michigan, is also the process owner at an Michigan-based fabricator specializing in components for the aerospace industry. He asked us not to save the video of his first attempt to weld with a camera attached to his torch. What you see here is his second try, directly following the first. With less than five minutes of practice, he was able to capture this video of what may be considered a "worst-case" scenario for mounting a camera to a manual welding torch -- micro TIG welding.
Note the detail that is visible as he is dabbing the filler wire at the front of the puddle. When instructors can provide their students with this type of close-up imagery, students learn faster. Also note that the image stays crisp and in focus for the long duration of the weld, which is a principle advantage of a torch-mounted camera.
